With not yet fully consolidated achievements of political freedoms and an active civil society underpinned by a poor but private sector, small business economy not tightly integrated into global supply chains, Kyrgyzstan’s transition holds promise but requires support. Overcoming the wide and growing lag of Kyrgyz women’s role in the economy is essential in strengthening this case in economic, social and human terms.

The Kyrgyz Republic is a land-locked country with a pivotal position between China and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Independent since 1991, the country stands apart in the region for a relatively free civil society, multi-party parliamentary politics with alternating governments, and an economy with a strong private sector. Kyrgyz-Uzbek ethnic relations remain a source of tension when politicised. Similar to Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan is closer to the aspired target state for transition economies than its much larger neighbours and regional peers. While geography and power make the country dependent on a stable regional context, its location at one of the main corridors for the to-be-revived “Silk Road” holds potential. Successfully entrenching the rule of law and an investment climate favourable to private and small business promise wider strategic benefits for regional development.

Dependent on gold prices and remittances, the Kyrgyz economy has big disparities

between centre and periphery and few large firms and a long tail of small businesses. Remittances by a large diaspora account for one third of GDP (one of the highest rates, globally) and together with mining (especially gold) tie the economy to commodity cycles directly and via the Russian labour market. Outside of mining and construction as politically exposed sectors, the economy consists of a highly fragmented field of private businesses struggling to differentiate and grow.

This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text.
